Before this year, almost all students at Simon's Rock were familiar with the veranda. Centered between the tri-dorms, it was the place where everyone would gather, socialize and play music until late at night. It was also the place where people would smoke. Not anymore.
The unpopular knowingly present policy, which Simon's Rock students and employees alike have fought against for years, is absent from the 2007-2008 Student Handbook. But while the exact words are no longer there, much of what the policy stood for is. "What I care most about is safety," said Associate Dean of Student Affairs Bob Graves.
In May, the popularity of a certain anonymous website, SRConfessional.com, had become dangerous. While the site started merely as a distraction during finals week, serious comments such as threats toward faculty members and a student caused concern in Simon's Rock officials.
Every year, the Student Handbook undergoes some changes. This year, however, the alterations in the handbook have not gone over well with the student body. Some of the major changes to the handbook include the deletion of the knowingly present policy, a revamping of the substances section, complete with a new categorization system, and an increased role of the associate dean of student affairs in the judicial process.
