Olivos to leave Simon's Rock, start business in Peru

Student Affairs looking to hire for new "wellness position" to fill RD vacancy

After two years as a Residence Director, and two and a half years of marriage, Anne and husband Juan Carlos Olivo will be leaving Simon's Rock to start their own business. Peru 109, a volunteer agency, will guide groups of students and professionals to develop sustainable projects in Peru.

Education reform specialist to speak at commencement

Education reform specialist Dr. Blenda J. Wilson will be the speaker for the 39th Annual Commencement Ceremony on May 17, according to a Simon's Rock press release sent to The Llama Ledger Tuesday night. Provost Mary Macy stated that she is honored Wilson, who has "dedicated her life to providing educational opportunity", agreed to be the commencement speaker.

South County sixth graders visit to explore college opportunities

An early start

The age of the students on campus this Friday was younger than ever as 200 South County sixth graders visited for a day of tours, information sessions and ten-minute-long model classes. The program, called Berkshire County Goes to College, is part of the Berkshire County Compact for Higher Education, which was started in 2005 by county members with the goal of "increasing awareness for the need for higher education," said Katie Dubendorf, admissions staff at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and key organizer of the event.

Committees form to address staff, faculty healthcare concerns

An ongoing issue on campus has been the high costs of Health Insurance for faculty and staff, and concern has been expressed. The issue was addressed at the Board of Overseers meeting that occurred on March 8. The Llama Ledger reported that Provost Mary Marcy is planning on forming a committee to address these concerns.

Daniel roof suffers major leak

Director of Physical Plant cites many possible causes

The Daniel Arts Center suffered a major leak a few weeks ago. Because the building is only six years old, this is surprising. According to Director of Physical Plant Steve Carignan, the Daniel has had "small leaks here and there, but nothing to the extent of what happened".

LETTER: Access to healthy, humane food helps address concern about farm animal welfare

EDITOR: It's great news that Simon's Rock students will be able to enjoy more healthy and humane foods on campus ("Bookstore provides vegan, vegetarian, organic foods," April 9.) Besides advantages for human health and the environment, vegetarian foods also address people's growing concerns about farm animal welfare.
