This past Saturday, roughly 30 students gathered in the Smokers Grove to celebrate Cancer Fest 2007.
Cancer Fest is a semi-annual festival that started four years ago at Simon's Rock and features an enormous cigarette that is communally smoked.
This year's cigarette was the biggest to date, containing roughly 1.25 pounds of tobacco, or 20 ounces. The first Cancer Fest had only a pound of tobacco. Additionally, the tobacco was wrapped in tissue paper and sealed with syrup.
The cigarette was lit outside of the Old Student Union and the procession moved down towards the Veranda, where the cigarette was smoked until Ken Geremia came out and asked everyone to go to the designated smoking area. The festival then made its way back towards the Smokers Grove and eventually settled on Kendrick Lawn where it remained until much of the 1.25 pounds of tobacco was smoked.
This year's Cancer Fest had more significance than in past years because of the new smoking rules, the possibility of large fines, and the rumored four-year plan to ban smoking from the campus.
