(U-WIRE)— Nearly 35 percent of college students say they are "very dissatisfied" with their school's current e-mail system, according to a Google survey.

The reason: a little less than 21 percent claim there isn't enough storage space and so they have their '.edu' e-mail forwarded to an e-mail with more accommodating storage.

"In fact, at many campuses over 20 percent of the student body already forwards their email," according to the Google Apps website. Given such information, Google has expanded its reign over all that is Internet.

The company that first began with an extensive and seemingly magical Internet search engine, eventually including search functions for specifics like images, news, directories and yellow pages, has now expanded to include a program called Google Apps. Google Apps, "a universally available access point for customized communication and collaboration services," includes an e-mail system, which holds up to two gigabytes, and has calendar and instant messaging capabilities. It has now expanded to include an "education edition," according to the Google Apps Web site.

The education edition "provides anywhere-anytime solutions that improve communication and collaboration among all members of the campus community," according to the program's Web site.

A handful of schools across the country have already switched to Google Apps Education Edition instead of utilizing their own information technology services. At UAlbany, students are afforded 100 megabytes of e-mail space through the system, which supports about 17,000 students. Recent UAlbany graduate Matt Wiemann said the space allotted to him was effective in "getting what [he] needed done."

Rowan University in New Jersey gives students 51.76 MB of space; Ramapo College of New Jersey, 120 MB; and students at Manhattan College in the Bronx use 50 MB of their e-mail space. Arizona State University started to move their 65,000 student population to the email system, which holds two gigabytes, 10 times the amount given to students at Rutgers University. Students have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the move.
