Last night, May 1, Mayfest kicked off with this semester's Dance Concert and the annual Mayfest Bonfire.
The Dance Concert, which has a second performance tonight, showcases 25 dances, with 77 dancers and the technical skills of an eight person tech crew, reports the program, designed by first-year Miriam Griffin.
A dance to a Pokémon medley, choreographed and danced by students Jo Albert, Zach Anderson, Noah Appelbaum, Elsie Baum, Philip Breslow, Lisa Caprera, CJ Foss, Gaby Losoncy, Geneva Preston, Torin Rozzelle and Olivia Stransky, was a favorite of first-year Sinead Byrne, who said, "It really put me in a mood to catch 'em all!"
The dance to the song "Circle of Life" from The Lion King, choreographed by Meghan McIntosh and Sam Scott and danced by Aurora Culwell, Residence Director Keon Diggs, Jack Jacob, Karen Lee, Molly Malmquist-Wessel, Meghan McIntosh, Wai-Khine Phu, Sam Scott, Aaron Smith, Kinley Wangmo and Stephanie Waldo, was also a crowd favorite, judging by the screams at the surprise appearance of Diggs as Rifiki.
"Also, I liked Alice's work with the microphones," said Byrne, referring to tech crew member Alice Hansmann's brief, but notable, role on stage while setting up a microphone for the dance "Guilty Feet Have Got No Rhythm or Hot Damn: This is my Jam," choreographed and danced by Tim Meyers, to live music played and sang by Elana Carroll-Manz.
The bonfire, which began around 9 p.m. with a torch lighting ceremony, lasted until 11.
Roasting hotdogs and marshmallows over the flames, and dancing on the Dining Hall patio both took place.
"I should be doing homework," said Peter Whitesell, who attended the bonfire despite the upcoming due date of a looming research paper. "But, this is more fun," he said.
"I ended up eating a dirty hotdog," replied Byrne when asked about her experience at the bonfire, "I really don't want to talk about it."
Tonight's events include a second showing of the Dance Concert beginning at 7:30 in the McConnell Theater, the House of Grace dance party at 10 in the Alumni Performance Center and the Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight in the Lecture Center.
Expectations of Rocky Horror are high in Crosby 4 as Byrne picks out her outfit for the show. "How was I supposed to know I'd need fishnet stockings this semester?!" complained Byrne, as she dug through her drawers in search of suitable attire. "Hopefully my fashion dilemma won't ruin all of Mayfest!"
