OPINION: Societal pressure on women at Simon's Rock
by Julia Gardner, Mindy Isser and Eva Thornton l Contributors
Issue date: 12/10/08 Section: Opinion
It is interesting to see how the women who responded that they felt more pressure than male students face in terms of appearance responded to how they judge, or feel that others judge their female professors, based on appearance.
"I think if I did dress more revealingly I wouldn't be taken as seriously as a student," said Morgan Vinyard, who also noted that, "A female teacher can't really wear t-shirts."
Lea Selitsky responded, "If I wear revealing or tight clothing it makes it harder to be taken seriously I think, but I also think that if/when boys wear tight/revealing clothing, they also get a lot of attention. But perhaps in a different way," to the question "Do you feel pressure to dress a certain way in order to be taken seriously as a student that is different than the pressures male students face?"
To the question, "Do you feel that you hold your male and female professors to the same standards in terms of judging their personal appearance and personal lives?" Selitsky responded, "I love knowing personal details about all of my professors, regardless of sex. But I am very nosy. I also like to judge their clothing."

I thought this debate was about them, as opposed to featuring them. Whoops.
