The low down of the alumni panel: Life after Simon's Rock

Issue date: 11/11/09 Section: News
On Halloween in the Kellogg Music Center, a diverse group of eight former rockers presented a panel open to parents and students. These rockers, who are on the same journey as us, just a bit further along, answered the crowd's questions to give insight into life after Simon's Rock
To start off, the eight introduced themselves: Keith Brierley-Bowers, class of '80, Penny Brierley-Bowers, class of '81, Matt Strassler, class of '81, Jesse Fecker, class of '92, Angela Labrador, class of '96, Sara Katzoff, class of '97, Reggie Greene, class of '00 and Nang Maung, class of '01.
These panelists left Simon's Rock to embark on various life and career paths. For example, Strassler came to Simon's Rock in 1981 and transferred to Princeton in 1983 after receiving his AA degree. He then went on to earn a BA from Princeton University and a PhD from Stanford University, and is now a theoretical high energy physics at Rutgers University.
Representing another path is Penny Brierley-Bowers, who attended Simon's Rock from 1981-1983, receiving her AA degree before going on to ultimately earn a doctorate in counseling psychology from West Virginia University.
She is now at Bethesda Naval Hospital working with combat soldiers and sailors suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injury.
The first question focused on what the panelists felt they gained from the Simon's Rock experience.
In response to this issue, Keith Brierley-Bowers, currently at Johns Hopkins University pursuing an MBA, said he "developed tremendously…[he] learned how to think, approach problems, and examine the world around him."
The panelists agreed that, even though it is a big adjustment, Simon's Rock is a great experience that develops people as well as minds.
Another part of the discussion focused on transferring of out Simon's Rock, about which factors to consider when choosing a college and the transfer process.
In general, regarding the factors of transferring, the panelists agreed the small classes and intimate experience of Simon's Rock were reasons not to transfer in themselves.

My wife is a graduate of The Rock, class of 84, and I have several friends that are graduates as well. The one thing they all agree on is the level of education you get at Simon's Rock is legions beyond most other campuses. (Continued…)
